The New Academic Street is nearly ready for take-off! In preparation, two fancy flight attendants commandeered the NAS Marquee on the corner of Bowen Street and Chemistry Lane on RMIT Higher Education Welcome Day, Thursday February 23. Their mission was to spread the word about safety on campus during the New Academic Street construction works. Free fairy floss, luxury cupcakes and NAS-branded lip balm were on offer for anyone attending the safety briefings.

Making the mundane exciting was all in a day’s work for our RMIT flight attendants as they distributed campus safety instructions designed as airline safety cards. They directed students through the key points of campus safety: always be aware of uneven footpaths and construction works when moving around the campus; look out for oncoming trams and bikes when crossing roads; and, of course, don’t forget the dangers of being distracted by mobile phones when walking.

The flight attendants were quite a hit. After their quick safety demonstration the lovely ladies moved to the Alumni Courtyard where they could scarcely go a few steps without being stopped by curious passers-by. The pair’s enthusiasm was infectious as excited students posed for photos and chatted with them about the great new facilities soon to be made available on campus.

Bachelor of Design (Games) student, James McKenzie was drawn in by the free cupcakes.

“I wasn’t too excited to hear a safety briefing but the people here are nice and I’m always keen for red velvet cupcakes.”

So with a little help from free snacks to entice students, the NAS ensured that everyone can enjoy campus life safely.
