Our vision

Students have told us they want more spaces to spend time on campus outside of class. Creating new spaces for students to study, collaborate and work has been a key objective of the New Academic Street project.

Our inspiration

A full length glass façade opens up the heart of the City campus to the rooftops of the CBD’s fringe, including an amazing view of the Exhibition Buildings in Carlton.

Multiple inter-connected stairs connect levels 9-to-13 and, at the beginning of 2017, the spaces will link to terraces over Bowen Street and later the Garden Building outside Building 8.

Open for use by all RMIT students, each of the three levels has its own unique look and feel. The portals were designed by Lyons, the lead architect on the project, who also designed Building 80 (SAB).

Features of the Student Portals

Lower Level

The lower portal (level 10) is fitted with working pods – suited to group work and collaboration. The design palette is muted and calming, and the spaces are semi-enclosed; encouraging collaboration and communication

Middle Level

The middle portal (level 11) echoes the popular State Library lawn across the road in Swanston Street – with gentle undulating green carpet suited to relaxation and hanging out, the portals are the ideal place to unwind or do some light reading.

Upper Level

The upper portal (level 13), which is closer to the Schools of Architecture and Design, and Property, Construction and Project Management, has working tables suitable for cutting and building models – it’s the ideal place for project work

Other key features:

  • All of the levels are fitted with WiFi
  • Small kitchenettes – with microwaves and boiling/chilled water taps – are also located on the lower (level 10) and upper levels (level 13).
  • STREAT cafe is located on level 11 on the middle portal.
