Our vision

Students tell us they love being part of the city but it’s hard to find space to relax and enjoy campus life. They also want more places to collaborate and study. The NAS project is creating multi-use areas across the entire space, with loads of new spots to hang out, chill, eat, study, collaborate, meet, play and work.

Our inspiration

The NAS project is about creating student spaces everywhere. Innovative, state-of-the-art facilities mean that spaces can be used by students and staff for various purposes and needs. Student feedback informed the shaping of teaching and learning spaces, study, recreation and retail spaces.

NAS is introducing loads more student study and recreation spaces to the City campus – many of the spaces are designed to accommodate both study and recreation, as well as group and solitary use. Inspiration has come from providing the freedom to choose how to use a space, and letting that define the user’s experience.

Features of the Student Spaces

The Student Portals

In March 2016, we opened the student portal spaces on levels 9-13 of Building 12. Across three multi-level areas, the portals provide 330 modular, multi-function spaces where students can collaborate, study, hangout and enjoy life on campus.

The NAS project will incorporate a four-storey open garden building, two rooftop terraces and flora throughout the campus. All of these spaces are designed with students in mind and provide informal, green areas to relax or study in

Library Spaces

The Swanston Library has spaces across multiple zones: light and airy social spaces will connect seamlessly with purpose-designed study spaces, outdoor and weather-protected terrace gardens; collaborative, silent and quiet study areas; and consultation and seminar rooms.

Food and Beverage Spaces

A major part of the Retail Precinct’s design includes 1000 new seats that will allow students to take full advantage of the area. As well as being able to consume the food on offer, students and staff can also eat and drink their own food or even just hang out and enjoy the wonderful smells coming from the diverse purveyors.
