A new environmental science soils lab has opened in Building 7 as part of the pre-New Academic Street construction works.

Project: Environmental Science Soils Lab

Architect: John Wardle Architects

Commenced: 19 December 2015

Completed: 28 February 2015

Completed at the start of Semester 1, the level 1 lab replaced the space in Building 14, level 2.

Laboratory Manager Karl Lang said the new facility offered students enhanced analysis functionality and could be used by up to 10 students at once.

The lab forms an integral part of RMIT’s environmental science programs as all students in associated courses will funnel work through the new facility.

Central to the lab’s design was a storage solution for the environmental science programs’ busy field-trip schedule and the associated scientific equipment.

In response, a state-of-the-art Compactus storage unit has been installed with direct access off University Way.

And, importantly, the new soil lab’s functionality has increased due to its close proximity to the environmental science laboratory and analytical instrumentation in Building 3.
